Surviving Silly Season

Navigating Self-Care During the Silly Season: Christmas Wellness Guide

Greetings! Let’s talk about keeping it together during the holiday season, because let’s be real, Christmas can be a rollercoaster of emotions and chaos. During this period, it’s crucial to prioritise some self-care moments. Here’s a survival guide to help you navigate the holiday season while nurturing your well-being.

🎄 Establish Boundaries: Set realistic expectations for yourself. Allow yourself to say no to things that overwhelm you, or when you feel the need to protect your time and energy. Prioritise activities that bring you joy and fulfillment.

🎄 Mindful Moments: Amidst the chaos, steal yourself some moments of mindfulness. Sneak in some deep breaths, a short meditation, a gentle yoga, or just a few minutes of quiet time to reset and reduce stress levels.

🎄 Mindful Eating Habits: Indulge! But practice balance, with some nourishing foods to support your wellbeing amidst the holiday feasting.

🎄 Rest and Sleep: Don’t skimp on rest! Maintain some semblance of a sleep routine as much as possible. Sufficient rest is vital for mental and physical rejuvenation, especially during this busy period.

🎄 Cherish meaningful connections: Spend quality time with family, friends or with those who give you a boost. Whether virtually or in person, fostering a sense of belonging and support.

🎄 Gratitude Practice: Cultivate gratitude. Amidst the chaos, take a moment each day to appreciate what’s good. A gratitude journal or daily affirmations can uplift your spirits.

🎄 Set Realistic Expectations: Perfectionism is overrated – put it in the bin. Embrace the messiness of the season and find joy in the simple moments.

🎄 Physical Activity: Incorporate movement into your routine. Whether it’s a quick walk, a stretch, or a workout session, exercise boosts endorphins and reduces stress.

🎄 Digital Detox: Take some time away from screens and social media. Engage in activities that don’t involve technology to give your mind a break and reconnect with some present-moment awareness.

🎄 Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge that it’s fine not to feel festive all the time. Allow yourself space for emotions and cut yourself some slack.

I have created a workbook that contains some useful pages around setting boundaries, listing enjoyed self-care activities, routine planning and examining our “circle of control”. This is also listed in the Resources page if you want to find it later (maybe during the next chaotic season in life).

Let’s be real, this time of year isn’t always joyous frivolity. We need to remind ourselves that self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for wellbeing. Prioritise self-care during the Christmas season to recharge the batteries and assist in navigating the festivities with a sense of calm(ish) and fulfillment. Embrace the holiday spirit while nurturing your mind, body, and soul 🌿
